Manchester Valley High School
Water Conservation and Pollution Prevention
Our students in the Enviro Club's Public Awareness Committee (about 7 students) and Ecology Classes (about 80 students) help to create posters which highlight water conservation efforts. Each bathroom includes automatic sinks to save water, electric hand dryers to prevent the use of paper towels, and dual function handles on the toilets to only use the necessary amount of water.
In our Science Research classes (about 60 students per year), students investigate, build, and test aquaculture systems where a pound fish can be raised in as little as 2 gallons of water. They compare this method to other areas of food production that require hundreds or thousands of gallons of water to raise 1 pound of meat. Students come away with a understanding of the local and global impacts of this technology, resource recycling and water conservation.
About 10 students a year are involved with the collection of printer cartridges and batteries from all areas of the school. About 20 cartridges a year and dozens of batteries are taken to a local retailer that recycles these materials
